color: #333333;\">One third of global sub-basins\u2014smaller working units of river basins, areas of land drained by a river or its tributaries\u2014will have severe water scarcity by 2050, scientists from the Netherlands and Germany predicted in a peer reviewed paper published in Nature Communications.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li class=\"halfway_hardwall_2\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #333333;\">After factoring in nitrogen levels, the number of water-scarce sub-basins in 2010 tripled from fewer than 1,000 to more than 2,500, the researchers said, systems that respectively cover 45% and 80% of the world\u2019s population.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;
