\u00a0<\/i><\/span>What’s new?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\r\n

I invite you to join us as we are embarking on a \u201cnew chapter\u201d within Sustainable Driftless and the issues that affect us all. As we contemplated the work after the loss of dear friend and leader George Howe last year (he was instrumental in the production of \u201cDecoding the Driftless\u201d), we naturally needed to consider our impact via our outreach. We are so happy to share that our work thus far has been impactful\u2013our first major effort, the award winning documentary<\/span><\/i> \u201cDecoding the Driftless\u201d<\/i><\/b> has reached over 180 Million viewers since its premier, and is still in circulation!\u00a0 Subscribers here at <\/span><\/i>SustainableDriftlessMag.com<\/i><\/b> exceed 10,000 views and shares each issue, and our growing social media reach is so encouraging\u2014just seeing what \u201ca few committed individuals\u201d can accomplish (and that is for all of us working towards sustainability) is gratifying\u2013and we continue to want to grow that impact!<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\"\"<\/b>This new film is a thoughtful documentary essay on the spirit (of all types) that make this region special.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/i><\/span>The \u201cNext Chapter\u201d \u2013What is Sustainable?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

My thoughts as I contemplate our fast changing world?\u00a0 It is about community, and caring for one another and the primary basis of that\u2013 is our shared environment.\u00a0 To live well in this place, we citizens are the decision makers that will determine abundance, or lack thereof.\u00a0 I<\/span><\/i><\/span>t’s about understanding what non profits and local government is doing, but also about what we as individuals do to make this world better.\u00a0 \u00a0I hope you will get involved!\u00a0 We set the tone, and should be advising our own local, state, and federal\u00a0 leaders to think better about what can be done to ensure a sustainable world. Whatever your political stripes, we all need to remember that we also have a lot of control by the individual, particularly when it comes to building sustainability in our lives, and in our communities.<\/i><\/p>\r\n

Making a Good Life\u2013A Comprehensive Viewpoint to Sustainability<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\r\n

Sorting out sustainability goes beyond sorting one’s recycling\u2013it includes ensuring our communities are strong with anchoring services, our kids are capable, resilient, and well-educated, our water is clean,\u00a0 soils are healthy, and the ecosystem of humanity, and of nature,\u00a0 is thriving.\u00a0 Sustainability includes what, where, and how we build to accommodate our families, schools, and communities.\u00a0 Sustainability means a life of contentment.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\"\"<\/span>Interconnected and Independent\u2013Public and Private Participation<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\r\n

We are dependent upon and must support those talented and determined farming families that contribute to our food system locally and to our communities–large and small.\u00a0 Each specialty that works in sustainability\u2013biologists, engineers, farmers, extension, activists, not for profits, business,\u00a0 political leadership, counties, school boards, educators, and volunteers of all ages\u2013 make it possible.\u00a0 In this time of \u201cprivatization\u201d, don’t lose site that our own efforts at preservation and protection are all more critical\u2013privately\u2013or via public\/private\/or NGO participation.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\"\"<\/span><\/i><\/span>Best to you and yours\u2013 and savor this season of joy and change while you manage your own summer garden\u2013and our transistion into fall–with a sense of a future of abundance!<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\r\n
