It was there, in the\u00a0 1970s, that a hand-carved set of trout lived. Admiring those natural vintage wood grains, I could\u00a0 see the artist\u2019s license at work\u2014a silent, graceful communication of the wild fish that swim Wisconsin\u2019s streams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those carvings weren&#8217;t just decor. They were part of a cozy space of Sunday night family\u00a0 activity, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucky 13 Fishing Show<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in a den filled with books about water. Looking back, that\u00a0 artwork wasn&#8217;t just aesthetic\u2014it was foundational. It shaped me into a vigilant advocate for\u00a0 water quality and biodiversity, grounding me in the visceral connection we humans have to our\u00a0 environment. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2973 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sustainabledriftlessmag.com\/sdmunicdn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/sketch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sustainabledriftlessmag.com\/sdmunicdn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/sketch.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sustainabledriftlessmag.com\/sdmunicdn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/sketch-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sustainabledriftlessmag.com\/sdmunicdn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/sketch-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>A Legacy of Visual Advocacy\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">The arts have always been the heartbeat of conservation. They didn\u2019t just portray the American\u00a0 landscape: they created the political will to protect it. We see this through the masters who\u00a0 came before us:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>The Illustrators: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John James Audubon transformed wildlife from a &#8220;commodity&#8221; to be\u00a0 used into a &#8220;heritage&#8221; to be cherished. His emotional, life-sized portraits sparked the\u00a0 birth of our first wildlife protection societies.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>The Painters: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thomas Moran and C.M. Russell provided the &#8220;visual evidence&#8221; for a\u00a0 Congress that had never seen the Missouri River or the wonders of Yellowstone. Their works led directly to the birth of our national parks. Russell in particular added a vital layer of\u00a0 cultural conservation, mourning the loss of the open range and honoring the\u00a0 environment through the eyes of Native Americans.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>The Writers: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Henry David Thoreau and John Muir provided the &#8220;soul.&#8221; They forwarded\u00a0 the philosophy that &#8220;wildness&#8221; is a requirement for spiritual health\u2014a philosophy Muir\u00a0 eventually hammered into the bedrock of the National Park Service.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>The Photographers: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ansel Adams brought the movement into the modern era, using\u00a0 high-contrast photography to turn environmentalism into a mainstream, visual &#8220;brand&#8221; the government simply couldn&#8217;t ignore.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>The Philosophers: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aldo Leopold<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expanded this legacy by introducing a &#8220;Land Ethic.&#8221; In his work, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Sand County Almanac<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he challenged us to stop seeing the land as property\u00a0 and start seeing it as a community to which we belong. The lesson he taught, that &#8220;to keep every cog and wheel is the first precaution of intelligent tinkering,&#8221; forever changed how we manage and respect our ecosystems.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2972 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sustainabledriftlessmag.com\/sdmunicdn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/duck.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sustainabledriftlessmag.com\/sdmunicdn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/duck.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/sustainabledriftlessmag.com\/sdmunicdn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/duck-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/sustainabledriftlessmag.com\/sdmunicdn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/duck-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">From the Bookshelf to the Heart\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">I love how the art of writing and books take us away, offering a slowing of life. They stand in stark contrast to the unrelenting onslaught of modern digital media. The shelf behind me is a living archive of our relationship with the Earth\u2019s waters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider the vintage classics of Ernest Hemingway\u2014 from the raw, physical connection with nature found in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nick Adams Stories <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the enduring struggle of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Old Man and the Sea<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Other classics are fortified with both technical and visionary concepts. John Ormsbee Simonds\u2019 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earthscape <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provides a\u00a0 blueprint for harmonious design while Julia Watson\u2019s revolutionary <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lo-TEK <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reminds us the &#8220;high-tech&#8221; solutions we seek today have been practiced by Indigenous peoples for\u00a0 thousands of years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, there are books that tie our environment to the rhythm of music. One of my\u00a0 favorites is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redemption<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, written by Cedella Marley about her brother, Bob Marley. It overflows with his timeless wisdom: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEarth is life\u2019s natural ruler, healer, and redeemer. Earth returns us to our natural self, and to God. If we stay rooted to her, we will be united in creation by love.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And now comes a new one from the rich shelves of Pearl Street Books in La Crosse, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Serviceberry<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of the #1 NYTimes best seller, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Braiding Sweetgrass.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> (Photo by:\u00a0 Joni Welda)<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>The Trance of the Frontier\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">I felt the full weight of this history of reflection recently in Montana. I had just finished a\u00a0 15-mile excursion into the wilderness on a bitter November day complete with a wind\u00a0 storm. With fatigued legs and that wonderful, intoxicated &#8220;outdoor air brain,&#8221; I found myself at\u00a0 the famous Borries Steakhouse in Great Falls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Across the bar, I stared into the eyes of a Native American portrait painted by C.M. Russell in\u00a0 the early 20th century. I fell into a trance, thinking deeply about our place on this earth. It\u00a0 reminded me we are not meant to be plunderers, but participants in a harmony.
